Besides Polenta and sweet potato, does anybody have any other alternatives for delicious french fries?

The Long Foodie-wanna-be -backstory:
OK, so YESTERDAY, I was at a restaurant (hoity toity) who served chickpea frites.
Which was basically ground up chickpeas w/ spices which they rolled out flat into a sheet, then cut into 4 inch sticks, about 1/2 inch thick, and baked. Kinda yummy? Yes.
But the sauce they served with it was a VERY sweet peanut sauce- like a satay peanut sauce but sweeter.
It was ick.
The nice waiter (apparently having experienced this reaction before) brought me a nice remoulade (aka tartar sauce) and it worked out much better.

I have never had panisse (the chickpea fries), but have wanted them ever since I saw David Lebovitz making them. *recipe*

I'm boring and always just make crispy roasted sweet potatoes.

If we're talking about making snacky things that could substitute for fries without being fry-like, I make this cauliflower "popcorn" and the artichokes below an awful lot.

Oven-Fried Artichoke Hearts
1 bag frozen artichoke hearts- open and add juice of half a lemon and smush around.

In a bowl, beat one egg with a Tbsp. of water.

In a large zip bag (I just use a bowl) mix:
1/2 c of flour
1/2 c of breadcrubs (I used panko)
1/4 c of shredded (not grated) parmesan or romano cheese
S&P to taste

Coat hearts in egg mixture then drop in bag of breading and shake to coat.

Pour out in a single layer on baking pan, drizzle with plenty of olive oil and bake at 450 for about 20 mins or until golden brown, turning halfway through.

I serve with a dipping sauce of 1/4 c of unflavored greek style yogurt and about
2 tsp of Sriracha or similar hot sauce. I serve the cauliflower with that sauce, as well.

If you are looking for a list of all tings fried that are delicious, I can hijack the shit out of this thread. However, I suspect due to your aim to eat better of late you are looking for HEALTHIER alternatives to fries.

I am of the opinion that if what you want if FRIES, it is FRIES you must have. I guess the best thing to do is just have a small serving, and restrict your other food intake for the day.

Sweet potato fries are LESS bad, but still it is a starchy food deep fried in hot bubbly grease!

I've had chickpea fries. They are gross. Fried plantains are ok. (Deep fry, then smash and pan fry) Yucca chips- tasty, but still...just a different starch.

You will not see me eating a kale chip.

Not-fries, but similar? I just wanted to post this: Pretzel Puffs
My favorite direction in the recipie:
quote:
Step 3. Add 1 1/2 cups of your flour, all salt and all the oil to the honey and yeast mixture. Some will say to do this in a separate bowl. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. They only want to slow you down and make you weak.
