RIP Tom Bosley, aka Mr. Howard Cunnignham. He was like a Big Brother to Fonzie, and a Good Dad to Richie, Joanie and the Erstwhile Chip. Marion, you are in our thoughts. Mr. Bosley was 83.

Yeah, that's a sad one. He was enormously talented, he was always just perfect and amazing in whatever role he was playing.

Alice in Chains bass player, Mike Starr was found dead yesterday.
All of my friends who knew him are posting sad RIPs on Facebook. I'll post here because I can be an asshole here and not be judged too harshly.
Let me first say that I know first hand that addiction is a motherfucker, and I thank the jeebus that I never tried my hand at heroin, because from what I've heard, trying to quit heroin is like - to paraphrase The Stranger - every cell of your body individually suffering from the worst heartbreak you can imagine and a junkie would steal a morphine suppository out of their own grandmother's asshole if they had half the chance.
Mike Starr was that kind of addict. He was bi-polar and he was a junkie. He was in mental pain constantly, and as much as he wanted to get clean, his diseases had his balls in a vice and he could not get out.
And I'm just going to say it here, so as to not offend any of my grieving friends, Mike Starr was a dick. I was never around him when he was clean, but actively using Mike was a fucking raging prick. He was abrasive, offensive, combative, hostile and he didn't give a shit.
So, Mike, I hope your demons have left you and you finally have peace, because they made you an asshole.

Yeah, I saw that story about him. Sad.
But, there you go. I know many heroin addicts w/ mental health issues who have gone on the put together decades of sobriety and live successful lives. And I'm guessing he stopped doing what he was supposed to be doing long before this happened. Did he OD?
I followed his story on Celeb Rehab and hoped that death would not, in fact, be his bottom--but it did seem likely. I also hope that he is finally at peace. Tragic.

My only experiences with him were outside bars that he'd been 86'd from, trying to get people to sneak him in, getting in people's faces, including mine, insisting he was Mike Starr from Pearl Jam and nobody caring, sticking his ID in my face so I'd believe him, and when my friend told him to step off, Mike trying to start a fight with him. Only once was he in my face, but I observed him many many times doing this to other people. He wasn't allowed into a lot places because of his shitty behavior.
I watched him on Celeb Rehab. I just don't think he ever was willing to let go of Layne's death. It was his prime excuse for using. His excuse security blanket. He wanted to get clean, but didn't want to do the work it took to live clean.
Being an asshole is expected when you're detoxing. You get a hall pass for that. But once you've moved into sober living and you're still behaving like an entitled, tantrum-throwing toddler because life dealt you a shitty and and and you took that hand and sprinted with it...well you're just a dick.
A good friend of mine was with him for a few years back in her using days. She couldn't watch Rehab because it was just too painful. I should call her and see how she's doing.

Just saw this about Mike Starr. I'm sorry he couldn't kick permanently, and I really hope Celebrity Rehab takes his death seriously and does a follow up. And MzE- you say whatever the fuck you want. He was a douche, and you have first-hand knowledge. I admire the fact that you don't white wash your experiences or deify him because he's dead.

True dat. And as was pointed out, he had mental health issues on top on addiction. That's also a gripe w/ CelebRehab- they don't seem to spend enough time w/ the mental health aspect. Kari Ann, MacKenzie Phillips, that Brandon Davis guy all seemed to have mental issues besides addiction that needed to be addressed.

She'd been in the hospital for a number of weeks, I believe. She was such a fireball. Had her scandals, but seemed so much more classy about them than 'kids today'. I will also be forever in her Fan Club for her stepping forward so forthrightly to help fund AIDS charities. It Simply Wasn't Done in the 80's, and she DID. While others headed for the hills, she headed straight into battles, testifying before Congress and lending her name and clout to help out. Plus? AMAZING actor, and REALLY beautiful.Rest In Peace, Elizabeth.

Good bye, Sarah Jane Smith, Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane on Doctor Who has died of cancer. She was notably the first feminist aboard the TARDIS. She was great in Doctor Who episodes, and in her own series (20 years later.) The Sarah Jane Chronicles. I shall miss her!

I hope that girl is at peace. I think she's been incredibly unhappy and sick for a very very long time. Some people just don't have the strength to claw their way out of that.

True enough. Perhaps not surprisingly, Russell Brand has written a thoughtful column about her life, death, and the nature of addiction- he's been through 2 rehabs, one for drugs, one for sex. He also knew Amy Winehouse, and watched her climb to fame.

That Russell Brand article is really great and so true. I've been biting my tongue and not jumping people's shit on Facebook. How many ding-dong-the-junkies-dead status updates have you seen? Left and right I'm seeing "She had no self control" and "She wasted her life and her talent because she refused to put down the crack pipe." It is not an issue of refusal. The nature of the disease of addiction is that it, sadly, WILL drive some to the gates of insanity or death. Some people simply can't get out of the grip. It's just sad. It's just so very very sad.
